José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz (1948–2019), was much better known as the singer José José. He was born into a family of singers and musicians who lived in the Clavería neighborhood. He began singing as a teen in the 1950s. His startling success rose from a performance of the song "El Triste" at a music festival held in Mexico City in 1970. By the 1980s, he'd achieved international prominence. An icon of Latin pop music, his death was commemorated across Mexico in 2019.
