Casa de las Humanidades UNAM

The Casa de las Humanidades, the House of the Humanities, is a small cultural and continuing education center in the Historic Center of Coyoacán. It’s operated as a satellite campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Today, the Casa offers a variety of outreach and training activities. These take place on site in classrooms and virtually, via the UNAM internet. The Casa dates from 2000 although the building was purchased by the University way back in 1978.

The Casa community makes use of an auditorium and a multipurpose room, a Humanities Bookstore and a reading patio. The Casa is also home to the General Directorate for Humanities Dissemination which works to integrate more of the UNAM Humanities curriculum into more of the broader society and especially that of the neighborhood.

The Historic Center facilities frequently host all number of educational and cultural events. And as these are connected closely with the Humanities faculty on the main UNAM campus, they can be formidable. Forensic anthropology, personal defense, literature, and classical music are just some of the themes picked up in scanning the Casa de las Humanidades’ considerable slate of events. Every month it gets better.

The center also hosts a book store and library, audio and video collections, and events coordinated with the local community. They also frequently collaborate with other cultural institutions in the area, such as the nearby Casa de Cultura Jesús Reyes Heroles, and those coordinated by the local Coyoacán government.
